The history of the Jews in America has been spelled out in books and dramatized on the big screen. But it has never been told through LP covers. Until now.

Better than Buggles…

Has there ever been a better video than this? Ok, other than Lionel Richie’s tour de force, Hello. Here is Nina Simone’s version of Erets Zavat Chalav from 1962 via the breathtaking boingboing, an exquisite video version of her track from Nina Simone Plays Carnegie Hall album. Huzzah!

This video will change your life….

It proves, amongst other things, that breakdancing was born on the streets… of a Yeshiva in Toronto. Warning: the song is hypnotic. You will not be able to get it out of your head.

Battlestar Jew-lactica

Judaea.jpg

Campus writes: We Jews, as people of the book, love a good story. So it comes as no surprise that we have quite a penchant for Prog Rock. This 1981 classic by the versatile Yerachmiel Begun is a lost gem. Its’ pulsating opening track Hand of Hashem is up there for me with anything from Marillion or Steve Hackett. However, the cover art is what really puts it over the top. Look at it. That Tron-esque design — Yeshiva Boys trapped in the Phantom Zone — just has not aged one bit.

Deck The Halls…

ChanukahCarols-smaller.jpg

Campus writes: Hannukah is for me the loneliest time of the year. This podcast warms the cockles of my heart then — eight minutes of many of my dead friends including Woody Guthrie, Mickey Katz, and Neil Diamond. And a pay off from Barabra Streiso that is golden. Best to all for 2007. Happiness and Health.

Knock-Knock

kaplan.jpg

Campus writes: This box-set consists of 6 full playing albums. 12 sides of Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan, a 20th century rabbinic heavyweight and Rob Reiner doppleganger taking on the questions of all-comers. And it is a classic that has not aged in terms of the pleasure it offers the listener. I gave all twelve sides a spin this weekend, and I admit it gave me pause for conisderation. Back then, the “questions Jews ask” all revolved around issues of theology, assimilation, biblical meaning, and Jewish value. What, dear readers, are the questions Jews ask today, the true matters of modern moment? The reasons for Ms. Spears apparent lack of a Victoria Secrets catalog? The extent of the beating the tag team efforts of Pamela/Kid and Cruise and the virtuous Katy Holmes are giving to the old fashioned institute of marriage? And who wants to sleep outside the theater Star Wars -style, with this old man, the night before Apocalypto opens?

DONATE TO US!
And You Will Know Us By the Trail Of Our Vinyl are big believers that the everyday art of the humble album cover can make us think again about the stories we have been told, the stories that have been left out, and the differences between the two. The plan is to gather them together for an art exhibition, and then publish them in one big beautiful book brimming with Passover seders, mambo parties, Israeli war tributes, and Johnny Mathis. We can’t do it alone, though, so raid your attics, clean out your storage bins, and send us your favorite Jewish LP covers. Don’t forget to write a line or two about what you love (or hate) about them. Email cover scans to us at 300 dpi or above, or if you want to mail in the real thing, drop us an email and we will happily discuss the best way to pull this off. We promise each and every album a loving home.
